Nolan served in the United States Navy during World World War World War II He then received his bachelors and law degrees from Boston College. He served as a district and superior judge in Massachusetts. In 1980, Nolan was appointed to the Massachusetts Appeals Court.
Then in 1981, Nolan was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court serving until his retirement in 1995.
