Removed, under the Clerical Disabilities Act, his ineligibility to sit in Parliament in 1889; Member London School Board (Marylebone Division), 1879-1897; member of Kent County Council, 1898; Chairman of Elementary Schools Education Committee, Kent, 1903; Mayor of Tentenden, 1896-1899; Chairman of the Council of the Royal Botanic Society, 1907.
