Studied at Diocesan College, Rondebosch. Profession of Forestry.
Sub-Assistant Conservator of Forests, Punjab, India, 1871. Passed examination in Hindostani language and in surveying and levelling. Superintendent of Plantations, Cape Colony, 1875, and in addition to other duties custodian of war prisoners, Langalibalele and Cetewayo, during their exile at the Cape.
Secretary to Sub-Committee for wood and vegetable products Indian and Colonial Exhibition, 1886 (medal and certificate). Conservator 1219 of Forests, Western Conservancy, Cape Colony, 1886. Eastern Conservancy, 1888.
Twice detached to report on certain plantations, Transvaal. On special duty to report on extent and value of the Crown Forests of the Transkei, 1893. On special duty to inquire into and report on the administration of the Transkeian Forests, 1898.
On special duty to organise a Forest Department in Natal and Zululand, receiving thanks of Natal Government 1902. On special duty to inspect and report on the Sylvicultural possibilities and to organise a Forest Department in the Orange River Colony, receiving thanks of that Government 1903. Acting Chief Conservator of Forests for Colony, 1905.
Appointment confirmed, 1906. Imperial Service Order 1903; Justice of the Peace and Roaa Magistrate for Cape Colony; o. son of late Joseph Storr Lister of Firlands, Rondebosch, Cape Colony.
