Began as clerk in country store, Ohio, later teacher in Iron City College. Became stenographer and private secretary to Richard S. Waring, founder of Standard Underground Cable Company, 1881. Secretary Standard Underground Cable Company, 1882, assistant general manager, 1889, vice-president and general manager, 1891, president, since 1909.

Vice Chairman of the Board General Cable Corporation Trustee Christ Methodist Episcopal Church.
