(The story of the first twenty years of Port Authority Tra...)
The story of the first twenty years of Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) can serve as an example and model for other public transit agencies. As the first of the modern high performance rail rapid transit lines, the PATCO system faced new problems, and PATCO management and employees overcame them to provide one of the most reliable and financially successful transit services in the United States. The author was involved from before operations began to PATCO's twentieth anniversary so has firsthand knowledge of what happened and why. Most histories of transportation agencies or companies reflect what happened, but seldom are able to provide the background of the decision making process. The author had access to a very large amount of original source information. The problem was to select information that would be both useful and interesting.
