Began as writer in Overland Monthly, 1869, later on Californian and wrote for Western Monthly, Lakeside Monthly, Harper’s Magazine, et cetera

Lived on ranch, 25 years. Connected with Santa Cruz Sentinel, since 1905.

Correspondent of San Jose Mercury-Herald. Began movement in behalf of conserving the redwoods, 1900.

Founder Ladies’ Forest and Song Bird Protective Association, 1901.

1st woman member and 4th vice president California Game and Fish Protective Association. Secretary Santa Cruz Humane Society. Vice president-at-large Sempervirens Club of California.
