Dugdale has made films around the world on drug barons, gangsters, police forces and revolutionaries. In 2005-2008 he made a three-year biopic of the fourteenth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, The Unwinking Gaze. The Guardian suggested that "it could force China into a more civil and humanitarian stance towards Tibet."
Dugdale is also a cousin of current Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron.
His 2002 film for the British Broadcasting Corporation, LAPD Blues, won the highest ratings of that year for a British Broadcasting Corporation current affairs documentary. Notable awards given Dugdale were the Mammoth Best Documentary award in 2008 as well as the runner up in the Best Documentary section for the Foreign Press Association in 2008.
