Born in 1831, he was educated at Lincoln College, Oxford.

He was vice-principal of York Training College from 1859 to 1861 then headmaster of the Liverpool Institute until 1865. He was principal of King William"s College in the Isle of Manitoba for the twenty years (1866–1886). And archdeacon of the island from then until 1894 when he became vicar of Holy Trinity, Hull.
He died on 25 March 1904.
