Grout, Josiah was born on May 28, 1841 in Compton, Quebec, Canada (of America parents). Son of Josiah and Sophronia (Ayer) Grout.

Education

Educated St. Johnsbury and Glover academics. (Doctor of Laws, University of Vermont and Norwich U., 1896). Private to captain 1st Vermont Cavalry, 1861-1863.

Major 26th New York Cavalry, 1864-1865.

Career

Admitted to bar, 1865. Practiced in Vermont, 1865-1875, in Illinois, 1875-1881. Farmer, Newport, Vermont, 1881-1917.

In law practice at Newport, 1905-1912.
