Joun Kurimoto opened a private school of his own. Shortly after he was ordered to leave for Hokkaido in 1852 and in the course of his six years’ stay there founded hospitals, medical laboratories, herberies and schools.
When the question of opening the port of Yokohama came up he was selected as committee member in 1864. Joun Kurimoto was next entrusted with the task of founding iron foundries, shipyards and making reforms in the military system. Then High Commissioner of Foreign Affairs and governor of Aki Province (Hiroshima Prefecture). Shortly after he was sent to France to strengthen relations between the two countries but had to return soon after as the Shogunate had collapsed during his absence in 1868. Thereafter Joun Kurimoto retired from government service and in 1874 joined the Hochi Shimbun as editor-in-chief.
Joun Kurimoto was elected as a member of Tokyo Academy in 1879.
