Jouni Juhani Törnqvist is a Finnish engineer, engineering researcher, and educator associated with Bronto Skylift. His career has combined industrial research and development, teaching at Tampere Polytechnic, patents relating to aerial-platform technology, and the development of digital and safety systems for mobile work machines.
Background
Jouni Juhani Törnqvist was born on July 4, 1967, in Tampere, Finland, to Pertti Juhani Törnqvist and Sinikka Virpi (Pirjo) Törnqvist. Tampere was an established center of Finnish industry and technology, and its educational institutions developed in close connection with the region's manufacturing and engineering sectors.
Education
Törnqvist studied at Tampere Polytechnic, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1990, and continued at the University of Technology in Tampere, receiving a Master of Science degree in 1993. The later institution was the Tampere University of Technology, a Finnish university specializing in engineering, technology, and applied scientific research. Tampere Polytechnic represented Finland's applied higher-education tradition, linking professional engineering education with the needs of regional industry.
His graduate studies coincided with the expansion of Finnish technology industries and with growing cooperation between universities, research institutes, and engineering companies. His subsequent career retained this connection through industrial research, product development, and teaching.
Career
Törnqvist began working at Bronto Skylift Oy Ab in Tampere as a research engineer in 1993 and held that position until 1997. Bronto Skylift is a Finnish manufacturer of truck-mounted aerial platforms used in rescue, firefighting, maintenance, and other work-at-height applications. From 1997 he served as a manager in research and development, overseeing work connected with the company's engineering and product-development activities.
His industrial work included participation in Finnish research programs involving condition monitoring, machine automation, and the sharing of technical knowledge among field-service personnel. In the S-STEP program, Bronto Skylift collaborated with research institutions and industrial partners on augmented and virtual reality, wearable technologies, and tools for delivering context-sensitive information to service personnel. Törnqvist was identified as Bronto Skylift's research and development manager in the project's final report.
He also contributed to the development of safety and control technologies for aerial platforms. In 2021, as head of advanced research and development at Bronto Skylift, he discussed a remote-control system intended to let firefighters operate essential platform functions from a safer distance. In later company and industry communications he has been identified as head of advanced research and digitization and as director of digital solutions and services, with responsibilities connected to digital planning, customer-service platforms, cybersecurity, and worksite visualization.
Alongside his industrial career, Törnqvist lectured at Tampere Polytechnic from 1993. He supervised engineering theses involving automated testing of aerial-platform weight sensors and communication between truck and platform CAN-bus systems. These projects connected applied engineering education with Bronto Skylift's product-development environment.
Achievements
Törnqvist was named as an inventor on the personnel-hoist patent associated with Bronto Skylift Oy Ab, concerning technology for personnel lifting equipment used in aerial-platform applications.
He contributed to industrial research and development projects involving machine monitoring, automation, augmented-reality support, digital field-service tools, and safety systems for mobile work machines.
