After studying the classics under Nankaku Hattori in Edo (1782) returned home and entered the service of Clan Lord Ikeda, who bestowed upon him a fief of 400 koku.
Later returned to Edo where he became an associate of such scholars as Shundai Dazai, Randai Inoue and Kankai Matsuzaki who helped him to achieve fame. Was a man of integrity and skilled at spear exercises. His work Jozan-kidan is a record of ancient warriors.
