During the Civil War, joined the Polish corps of Dowbor-Musnicki. Lived in independent Poland between the world wars. At the beginning of World War II, taken prisoner by the Red Army.
One of a handful of Polish officers who escaped the NKVD mass murders at Katyn and other places. Left the Soviet Union in the Polish Army of General Anders after the German invasion of the USSR. Wrote one of the earliest and best accounts of the Gulag, Terre Inhumaine, Paris, 1949. Settled in France. One of the founders of the Polish magazine, Kultura.
