Juan Fernández was a navigator and explorer in the Caribbean and South American seas.
Achievements

He was the first to sail from Callao to Chile in thirty days by sailing out to sea and taking advantage of the helpful trade winds. Previous to this, ships had stayed close to shore, where unfavorable headwinds lengthened the voyage to several months, and the unprecedented speed of Fernandez's voyage almost led to his condemnation as a sorcerer. In 1573 he discovered the islands to the west of Valparaiso which bear his name, and unsuccessfully attempted to found a colony there
