Judith Fetterley was born on November 28, 1938, in New York City, New York, United States. However, she was raised in Toronto, Canada, for several years. When Judith was ten years old, her family moved to Franklin, Indiana.
In her early years, Judith studied in public schools. In 1960, she attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Swarthmore College. Later, in 1966, Fetterley got a Master of Arts degree from Indiana University Bloomington. Later, in 1969, she received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same educational establishment.
In 1967, Judith began her career as an assistant professor of literature and women's studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the post she held till 1973, when she moved to the State University of New York at Albany as an assistant professor. In 1978, Fetterley was promoted to the position of an associate professor of English at the same university. In the fall of 1995, she taught a graduate course on 19th-century American women writers (1820-1870).
Fetterley has also contributed to different periodicals, including American Literary History, Modern Philology, Legacy and College English. Moreover, she authored two books, such as "Resisting Reader: A Feminist Approach to American Fiction" (1978) and "Writing out of Place: Regionalism, Women and American Literary Culture" (2003). In addition, she edited several writings, including "Provisions: A Reader from 19th-century American Women" (1985).
Currently, Judith holds the post of a Professor of English at the State University of New York at Albany.
