Judith Godwin attended Mary Baldwin College for two year before transferring to Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University, where she completed her degree in 1952. She moved to New York City in 1953, where she attended the Art Students League. She also studied with Hans Hofmann and Will Barnet.
She shared a studio with Franz Kline. Godwin is considered a second-generation abstract expressionist. Her papers are held at the Archives of American Artist
San Francisco 2003 Holtzman Art Gallery, Towson University 2009 Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery 2010 Spanierman Gallery 2011 Spanierman Gallery 2012 and the Anderson Gallery of Virginia Commonwealth University.
She lives in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, but as a native Virginian, remains a member of the Jamestowne Society.
