Judith F. Stone was born on December 11, 1946, in Newark, New Jersey, United States, to Fred and Jean (Kassern) Freudman.
Stone received her bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University, in 1968 and 1973 respectively. Six years later she earned her doctor's degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Stone's career began at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she worked as a lecturer in history in 1976. For a year from 1976, she served at the State University of New York at Binghamton as a managing editor of Review, the journal of the Fernand Braudel Center. From 1977 till 1980, Stone held a position of a mentor and tutor at Long Island Regional Learning Center of the State University of New York Empire State College in Saratoga Springs, she was also an adjunct instructor at Center for Labor Studies there, for a year from 1979. Stone also served as an assistant professor at Center for Labor Studies at the State University of New York Empire State College from 1981 till 1984. Stone also worked at the Central Michigan University as an assistant professor of history, from 1980 till 1981. She then moved to Reed College in Portland, holding a position of a visiting assistant professor there for two years from 1984.
Stone joined Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo in 1986, taking a post of an assistant professor till 1989, rising to an associate professor, she held that post till 1996. She became a professor of history in 1996. For three years from the next year, she held a post of Mary U. Meader Professor of Modern European History. Additionally, Stone was a director of undergraduate studies in history at Western Michigan University, in 1995 and 2003.
In addition to her writing activity, Stone is a contributor of articles and reviews to academic journals, including French History.
