Päiviö"s brother Allan Paivio is an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Western Ontario. He is best known for his dual-coding theory. Paivio left Canada at the age of 19 to fight in the He was captured during the war, saved from execution by an Italian officer, and placed in a prisoner-of-war camp.
Paivio was the last surviving Canadian veteran of the, and in 2012 he was honored by the Spanish government by being granted honorary citizenship.
