Enlisted in U.S. Army after graduation from high school. After basic training, spent five years in the 14th Army Band (The WAC Band). Participated in President Kennedy's inaugural parade. Attained the rank of sergeant. Spent a year on recruiting duty in New York City. Became the first woman assigned to an Army band other than the WAC band in 1964 with the 173rd Army Band at Ft. Dix, NJ. Left the Army in 1967. Worked as a reporter for the Savannah (GA) Morning News/Evening Press for two years, then entered Savannah State College. Completed graduate studies in 1977. Worked as a Safety Specialist for the Veterans Administration in Baltimore, MD, for 9 years. Worked as a postal clerk in Baltimore and Bel Air, MD, retiring in 1992. Served in the Maryland Defense Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
