In 1875 Julia Ivanovna graduated from Kiev Women School of Dutchess Levashova. In 1879-1882 studied at the Bestuzhev Courses.
In the 1890s moved to Saint Petersburg, became a member of Free Economic Society. Julia Ivanovna periodically traveled around the country. It is known about the trip to the Far East, undertaken by her in 1904 shortly before the start of the Russo-Japanese War.
Julia Ivanovna began writing in Kiev, shortly after the end of the Kiev Women School of Dutchess Levashova. However, her attempts to publish in the local press were unsuccessful. Yakovleva’s literary debut took place already in Saint Petersburg, when in 1878 her story "Na chistyy vozdukh" was published in the popular science journal "Svet", dedicated to provincial life. Since the beginning of the 1880s, her novels, short stories and essays began to be published in many literary magazines and almanacs, such as "Vestnik Yevropy", "Mir Bozhiy", "Novoye Slovo", "Russkaya mysl", "Russkoye Bogatstvo" , "Severny Vestnik".
Julia Ivanovna also collaborated with children's publications, in particular with the magazines "Igrushechka" and "Yunyy chitatel'", writing stories and fairy tales for them.
In 1892, the first collection of her works, called Oforty, was published in Saint Petersburg. It included works of various genres: novels, short stories, and fairy tales.
In the early summer of 1910, while in Dvinsk, Julia Ivanovna was hospitalized and was sent for surgery on June 3, after which she died.
