Initially, Julian was educated at the Kraków School of Fine Arts (now Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts) under the tutelage of Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. Some time later, he enrolled in Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
When Julian Fałat finished his studies, he arrived in Ukraine, where he worked as a draftsman during archaeological excavations. Some time later, he worked in the studio of architect Feliks Gasiorowski in Odessa.
In 1884 Fałat went to Spain and stayed there during one year, and later travelled around the world. The painter documented this trip by creating watercolors, only a few of which have survived these days. After returning to Poland in 1887, he started to paint hunting scenes.
During the period from 1886-1895, the painter served at the court of Wilhelm II in Berlin. In April, 1895 he became the director of Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts.
Julian organized retrospective exhibitions in Krakow and Warsaw in 1925.

Julian married Maria Luiza Comello de Stuckenfeld in 1900. The couple gave birth to three children — Helena, Kazimierz and Lucjan.
