Became 1st instructor Illinois College, Jacksonville, 1830, professor mathematics, natural philosophy, astronomy, 1831-1844, president, professor mental science, science of government, 1844-1876, kept. college free from narrow sectarian control. Delivered opening sermon at 1st National Council of Congressional Churches, Boston, 1865.
Radical abolitionist.
Sent to England during Civil War to win more sympathetic support for Northern cause. Occasional contributor to New Englander, the Congregational Review, the Princeton Review.
