Lissy Jablonski was fifteen during the summer of 1985. That was the summer her father, a soft-spoken, seemingly passionless gynecologist, up and left her mother for a redheaded bank teller. The same summer Lissy and her mother disappeared from their quiet New Hampshire lives to have an adventure of their own amid a cast of unlikely characters, including a Valium-addicted ex-debutante and a suspected mobster. The summer the reliably comforting "girl talks" with her mother began to reveal startling secrets.

A mosaic of memories, the poems of "This Country of Mothers" recollect Julianna Baggott’s experiences as both mother and daughter. With wit, compassion, aggression, and anxiety, Baggott examines her maternal history. She recalls moments of creation and destruction in her life, times of elation and of desperation that mold her as both a woman and a poet.

"Compulsions of Silkworms and Bees" takes up the tradition of "Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet," but on poetry's own terms. At first glance, Baggott's candid counsel can be seen as a manual on writing poetry, written in poems. As the book unfolds, however, these poems take on the larger landscape of love and loss, the rigors of living fully, and the intricate, mysterious territory of our fragile, hardworking souls.

Two rambunctious, romantic flameouts. One boring wedding. One heated embrace in a quiet coatroom. This is not exactly the recipe for true love. John and Jane's lusty encounter at a friend's wedding isn't really the beginning of anything with any weight to it; even they know that. When they manage to pull back, it occurs to them that they might start this whole thing over properly.

Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers... to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small.

2009Julianna Baggott on the interview for The Rumpus said: "I was raised Catholic, and I have a deeply Catholic imagination. I’ve left the Church - for many reasons that I’ve written about publicly - but it’s still a large part of my identity, and I still have my faith, if not my Church."
By organizing "Kids in Need - Books in Deed," Julianna Baggott focused on literacy and getting free books to underprivileged children in the state of Florida. Over the years, with the help of those who are committed to literacy, "Kids in Need - Books in Deed" has been able to collect and donate thousands of books, both new and lightly used, to children across the state of Florida.
Quotations:
"I'm a writer of faith who worries about the intolerance of religion. I look at the past and fear we haven't learned from it. I believe that humanity is capable of evil as well as great acts of courage and goodness. I have hope. Deep down, I believe in the human spirit, although sometimes that belief is shaken."
"I am politically pro-choice but personally pro-life. I have my faith but refuse to force it on the world at large - especially this world, so brutal and unjust. I cannot make these wrenching personal life and death decisions for others - nor do I believe they should be made by a church-run by childless men."
"I believe - deeply - that identity dwells within. The thing that pops to mind here is the complexity of gender identity, for example, but it could take me years to try to apply it… I will say that I believe our true identity, our unconditionally loved inner selves to be pure. It’s something I’ve never thought of before in these terms. Maybe I’m talking about the soul itself, but I’m also certainly including the brain, an organ of imagination – without it, how do we imagine the soul? Identity is something that fascinates me. Purity is a term that feels socially manipulative, and it has so many connotations it’s hard to categorize. I realize now I’m rambling. Usually a sign that I’m not deconstructing or constructing anything, just moving some blocks around."
Julianna Baggott is married. Her husband, David Scott, is a writer too. They have four children.
