In 1975 Julie received Bachelor of Arts in History at Cambridge University. Then he got Master of Arts in American Studies at London University in 1976 and Master of Arts in History at Bryn Mawr College in 1977. Finally, she earned Doctor of Philosophy at Bryn Mawr College.
Julie Winch has been a member of the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in Boston since 1985. She has been the recipient of two National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, and has held fellowships and research awards at Mystic Seaport, the American Antiquarian Society, the John Carter Brown Library, and Yale University’s Beinecke Library. She has worked on various documentary projects, including PBS’s Africans in America and The Learning Channel’s genealogy program, "Who Do You Think You Are?"
Professor Winch is currently working on two books. Under contract with Oxford University Press, "Reflections on Freedom" uses individual biographies to explore the multiple meanings of liberty in the lives of free people of color from the Declaration of Independence to the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. In a departure from her main area of scholarly interest, she is also writing a book tentatively titled "Cheese Wars, or Blessed are the Cheese-Makers", an account of Thomas Jefferson’s 1802 New Year’s gift and the media sensation it created.
