He followed his father’s profession and studied Western-style medicine under Nobuyoshi Tsuboi, the clan physician, and then under two Dutch doctors. He elevated to a first rank physician of the Imperial Court (1883) and then physician to Emperor Meiji. Created Baron (1907).
