The younger Daniel received a presidential appointment from James Knox Polk to the U.S. Military Academy, where he graduated thirty-third in a class of forty-two in 1851. In October 1860, he married Ellen Long. Daniel was a second lieutenant in the army in Kentucky in 1851.
The following year he was promoted to first lieutenant, and he served in New Mexico before resigning in 1858 to run his father’s plantation in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana. When the Civil War began, he was elected colonel of the 14th North Carolina Infantry. He also helped to organize troops at the beginning of the Civil War.
He was a brigade commander during the Seven Days’ battles and served with particular gallantry at the battle of Malvern Hill. Promoted to brigadier general on September 1, 1862, he was a hero on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Daniel continued service with the Army of Northern Virginia and fought in the battle of Drewry’s Bluff in May 1864.
Lee himself recommended his promotion to major general. Daniel was mortally wounded at the “Bloody Angle” of Spotsylvania Court House while trying to recapture the Confederate works.
