Justin Bieber, in full Justin Drew Bieber, is a Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and a teen idol who lives in the United States. Releasing his first album at the age of 15, Justin Bieber has gone on to become one of the most talked about artists in recent times, both for good and bad reasons.
Background
Ethnicity:
Bieber's mother is of French-Canadian descent; his paternal great-grandfather was of German ancestry, and his other roots are English, Scottish and Irish.
Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, Canada, to Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber. His dad, Jeremy Bieber, left to start a family with another woman, so after becoming pregnant when she was 18 years old, his mother Pattie raised Justin with a help of Bieber's grandmother Diane and stepfather, Bruce.
According to some media reports, Justin and his father weren’t close growing up; his dad has been at times described as being a “deadbeat” who only resurfaced after Justin achieved YouTube fame. However, despite their allegedly complicated relationship, Justin has maintained that he and his dad are close. In February 2016, Justin told GQ magazine, “I’m a lot closer to my dad than I am to my mum.”
Through Jeremy, Bieber has three younger half-siblings. Jeremy and his ex-girlfriend Erin Wagner have two children, a daughter Jazmyn and a son Jaxon. They broke up after seven years in 2014. Jeremy later married his girlfriend Chelsey in February 2018, and they have a daughter together named Bay. Justin welcomed little sister Bay to the family.
As a child, Bieber showed a strong interest in music, teaching himself to play many instruments. When he was 12, he entered a local talent competition, and placed second. His mother posted his performance on YouTube and continued to post other clips of Bieber singing.
Education
At elementary level, Bieber attended Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School, a French-language immersion school in Stratford. Growing up, he learned to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. In 2012, Justin Bieber graduated from high school, the St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, with a 4.0 GPA.
In early 2007, Justin Bieber sang Ne-Yo's "So Sick" for a local singing competition in Stratford and was placed second. His mother, Mallette posted a video of the performance on YouTube for their family and friends to see. As a result, Justin and his mom began posting clips of Bieber performing covers of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Ne-Yo on YouTube.
By sheer chance, Justin Bieber's future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled upon one of his YouTube videos while searching for another singer. He immediately flew him to Atlanta, Georgia, and arranged meetings with Usher Raymond, as well as Justin Timberlake. In 2008, he eventually signed to Raymond Braun Media Group, a joint venture between Braun and Usher.
On May 18, 2009, Bieber's first single, "One Time", was released to radio while Bieber was still recording his debut album. The song had success in international markets and was certified platinum in Canada and the United States and gold in Australia and New Zealand. His first EP, "My World", was released on November 17, 2009, and was able to match the success of his debut single, selling more than 137,000 copies within a week. To promote the album, Bieber performed on several live shows such as mtvU's VMA 09 Tour, European program The Dome, YTV's The Next Star, The Today Show, The Wendy Williams Show, Lopez Tonight, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, It's On with Alexa Chung, Good Morning America, Chelsea Lately, and BET's 106 & Park. During that period, Bieber has also starred in an episode of True Jackson, VP, and in December 2009, he performed at the White House for US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
In January 2010, the single "Baby", was released from his debut album, "My World 2.0", and became an international hit overnight. The album, which officially released on March 19, 2010, reached the top ten charts in many countries, peaking at No.1 in Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. To promote the album, Bieber appeared on several live programs including The View, the 2010 Kids' Choice Awards, Nightline, Late Show with David Letterman, The Dome and 106 & Park.
On June 23, 2010, Bieber began his first official headlining tour, the "My World Tour", from Hartford, Connecticut. Later in 2010, Bieber released the album "My Worlds Acoustic", featuring stripped-down versions of his songs, and published an autobiographical book, "Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story".
"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never", a documentary film interspersed with 3-D concert footage, opened the following year. Bieber maintained his visibility with the albums "Never Say Never: The Remixes (2011)", a companion to the film, and the Christmas-themed "Under the Mistletoe" (2011), both of which hit number one in the United States and Canada.
In late 2011, Bieber began recording his third studio album, entitled "Believe". "Boyfriend", the first single from his third studio album "Believe", was released on March 26, 2012. The full album was released from Island Records on June 19, 2012, and sold 374,000 albums in its first week, before the disappointment of the following year's Journals, a downbeat album without a hit single. To promote the album, Justin started the "Believe Tour" in September 2012.
On December 14, 2012, Bieber appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he announced plans to release an acoustic album titled "Believe Acoustic", which was released on January 29, 2013.
In October 2013, he released a sequel to "Never Say Never", a biographical concert film titled "Justin Bieber's Believe". Prior to the release of the film, he released a new song every Monday for 10 weeks as a lead-up to the film.
Bieber made a comeback in 2015 with "Purpose", which became his fifth million-selling record in the United States by the end of the year. His fourth album was led by the single "What Do You Mean?" which released on August 28, 2015. It became his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Guinness World Record as the youngest male artist to debut at the top of that chart. The next two singles, "Sorry" and "Love Yourself", climbed to the peak of the same chart, making him the first artist in a decade, after Justin Timberlake, to achieve this feat.
On November 11, 2015, Bieber announced he will embark on the "Purpose Tour". The tour started in Seattle, Washington on March 9, 2016. However, on July 24, 2017, Bieber cancelled the remaining dates of his Purpose Tour "due to unforeseen circumstances".
In January 2017, Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Luis Fonsi released the hit "Despacito" on YouTube; the video soon became the most-watched video of all time on YouTube. A few months later, after hearing the song in a nightclub in Colombia, Justin Bieber asked Fonsi to collaborate on a remix. Their song went on to hit the number one spot on the Hot 100; after 16 consecutive weeks in the top spot, it broke the all-time record as the longest-standing chart-topping song in August 2017.
Aside from his career as a musician, Bieber has also ventured into the worlds of business and philanthropy. He has become an angel investor for technology companies and made his first startup investment in 2009. Since then, he has quietly invested millions of dollars in a dozen small technology start-ups including Shots, game-for-good company Sojo Studios, Spotify, and Stamped. He has said that he is not going to invest in something he does not like, as he has to believe in the product. Bieber has bandwagon four fragrances as of 2014. He launched his debut fragrance, Someday, in 2011, it grossed more than three million USD in sales, at Macy's, in just under three weeks, which industry experts respect as a successful celebrity-led launch. On the heels of that 2011 best-seller, he launched his second fragrance, Girlfriend, in June 2012. His third fragrance, The Key, was launched in July 2013, and his fourth fragrance, Justin Bieber Collector's Edition, launched in 2014.
In early 2015, Bieber became the new "face" and "body" of Calvin Klein. In June of the same year, Bieber teamed up with StarShop, a new shopping app launched by Kevin Harrington.
Justin Bieber is a Canadian singer and songwriter who has taken the music world by storm, achieving immense success following the release of his singles from his debut EP "My World". He retained his soaring fame with the release of his debut studio album "My World 2.0", which sold over 3,350,000 copies in the United States alone, and received Platinum certification in the United States, Canada, England, Australia and New Zealand. He continued to break records with his next albums, "Under the Mistletoe", "Believe" and "Purpose". His third studio album, "Believe" is rich in elements of dance-pop and contemporary R&B, and marks his transition from a teen pop style. Riding the success of its lead single "Boyfriend", the album sold over 3 million copies worldwide. It became Platinum certified in the United States, Canada and Australia while achieving Gold status in England. Bieber's latest studio album "Purpose" sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide and received Platinum certification in many countries including the United States, Canada, England and Australia.
On November 13, 2015, the release of Purpose marked his sixth album to debut at number one. He also became the first artist, since Elvis Presley in 2005, to replace his own song as number one on the UK Singles Chart.
As of 2016, Bieber has received fourteen titles in the Guinness World Records, which include eight that were achieved from the success of his album Purpose and was featured in the 2017 Edition. These records included the most streamed track on Spotify in one week, the most streamed album on Spotify in one week, the most simultaneous tracks and most simultaneous new entries on the US Billboard Hot 100 by a solo artist, the first act to occupy all top three positions simultaneously on the UK Singles Chart, the most followers on Twitter by a male, the most viewed music channel on YouTube by an individual, and the most subscribers on YouTube for a musician by a male.
As of 2017, Bieber was the second most followed user of Twitter, while his VEVO channel made him the third most subscribed user of YouTube until by 2018 where it became the second most subscribed user of YouTube.
Bieber was included among the top ten in The Highest-Paid Celebrities Under 30 annual list in the world by Forbes magazine. He has been listed six times in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
"Steps to Stardom," an exhibit on Bieber's early career opened in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario in February 2018 at the Stratford Perth Museum, offering a collection of mementoes from his formative years and rise to international stardom.
During his career, Justin Bieber has released a couple of remix albums, two biographical concert films, and has appeared on numerous television shows to perform live. Totally, throughout his career, Bieber has sold an estimated 140 million records and is considered to be one of the best-selling music artists globally. He also has won twenty one MTV Europe Music Awards (one is a special award), which is the most awards received by a single artist to date. Besides his numerous awards, Bieber has earned ten Grammy nominations and six NRJ Music Award nominations.
Bieber identifies himself as a faithful adherent of Christianity, said he communicates with God via prayer, and that "he's the reason I'm here". He reflected his faith in a music video with Brandon Burke, titled "#iPledge", in which he "talks candidly about his appreciation for the tenet of forgiveness in the Christian faith".
Bieber was baptized by Pentecostal pastor Carl Lentz of Hillsong Church New York, who is a close friend, on January 9, 2014, after a born again experience.
Many of Bieber's tattoos have religious significance including the medium-sized cross on his chest and a tiny cross under his eye. Bieber also covered up the "Son of God" text tattooed on his abdomen with a large design that features two angels, gothic arches, a skeleton and a serpent.
Politics
Justin Bieber is not a fan of politics, in fact, he does not know much about it. According to him, "I am not sure about (political) parties. But whatever they have in Korea, that’s bad."
However, as Justin Bieber is a Canadian, he is a proud one at that. He has said that he won’t even consider U.S. citizenship because Canada is a much better country, saying of Americans, "You guys are evil. Canada’s the best country in the world. We go to the doctor and we don’t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you’re broke because of medical bills. My bodyguard’s baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby’s premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home."
Views
Regarding sexual abstinence, Bieber told music magazine Rolling Stone in 2011, "I don't think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them." He added that he does not "believe in abortion", and that it is "like killing a baby." When asked about the case of abortion with regard to rape, however, he said, "I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that."
His view on sexual orientation is quoted as "everyone's own decision", and he has contributed to the It Gets Better Project, a non-profit group aiming to prevent suicide among LGBT youth.
Justin Bieber is also considered to be a philanthropist. He supports Pencils of Promise, a charity founded by Adam Braun, the younger brother of Bieber's manager. The organization builds schools in developing countries, and Bieber became a manager for the organization's campaign in Guatemala. He serves as a celebrity spokesman for the organization by running ads for the charity and its campaign "Schools4All".
Justin Bieber also appears in an animal welfare PSA for PETA encouraging people to volunteer at and adopt from animal shelters instead of buying pets from breeders or pet stores.
Quotations:
"I'm a grounded person. I don't need security when I'm home as they know who I am. I live with my mum and tour with my dad... I'm just a regular 16-year-old kid. I make good grilled cheese and I like girls."
"If you don’t dream big, there’s no use of dreaming. If you don’t have faith, there’s nothing worth believing."
"I don't like girls who wear lots of make-up and you can't see their face. Some girls are beautiful but insecure and look much better without the make-up, but decide to put loads on. I like girls with nice eyes and a nice smile."
"I’m living proof that dreams do come true. Work hard. Pray. Believe."
"I was discovered on YouTube and I think I was detrimental to my own career."
"Haters are just confused admirers."
"I want to grow as an artist and I'm taking a step out, I want my music to mature."
"I’m crazy, I’m nuts. Just the way my brain works. I’m not normal. I think differently."
"If you really don’t enjoy the type of music I make and that’s not you, OK. But don’t say I’m not talented. If you haven’t noticed, I wasn’t made — I was found."
"I’m not going to say I’m sorry for the things that I’ve done because I think that it allows me to tell a story. If I would’ve come into the industry at a young age and never had any failures, people would’ve been like, Who is this kid? He’s not relate-able. Now, I went through my shit, I came out on the other side, and I’m going to show you it gets better."
"When I was coming up, trying to get to where I am now, people were so happy for me. They were rooting for me. Now that I'm on top, everyone wants to bring me down. Everyone's trying to tug at me and take my spot... A lot of people say they hate Justin Bieber who haven't even listened to my music. They just hate the idea of me."
"I don't want to start singing about things like sex, drugs and swearing. I'm into love, and maybe I'll get more into making love when I'm older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody."
"If I can do just one-tenth of the good Michael Jackson did for others, I can really make a difference in this world."
"All our decisions are based on long-term decisions. We use Michael [Jackson] as a template. The things he did for his career - a lot of the times it's was good, some of the times it was bad - but he was successful from being young to being old. That's what I want to get to. I don't want to grow up and lose my young fans, singing inappropriate music."
"My voice always wanted to do runs, vocal acrobatics. Rather than make music that everyone else is making, with the same four-on-the-floor beat, I have a chance to change music. There's only a certain amount if people that can do that."
"When you’ve reached a certain point in your life, there are people out there waiting to see you fall. but rather than let gravity take you down, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands and fly."
"I turned a lot of people off over the past few years, but I know I can still turn out good music and turn everything all around. I've lost some of my best qualities. For that I'm sorry. I'm looking forward to being someone who you guys can all look at and be proud of."
"I’m not a fighter by nature, but, if I believe in something, I stand up for it."
"I'm looking forward to influencing others in a positive way. My message is you can do anything if you just put your mind to it."
"I want my world to be fun. No parents, no rules, no nothing. Like, no one can stop me. No one can stop me."
"A girl has to have a beautiful smile, beautiful eyes and she should have a good sense of humor. She should be honest, loving and trustworthy."
"We're trying to set up a movie for me in the near future. It's going to be similar to the story of how I got discovered. Kinda like my own version of '8 Mile.'"
"I've got my eye on a few things to spend my money on. I've got my own bank card but I am really good with money. I don't spend too much at all."
"I grew up below the poverty line; I didn’t have as much as other people did, I think it made me stronger as a person, it built my character. Now I have a 4.0-grade point average and I want to go to college, and just become a better person."
"Young people in the business have grown up and made the wrong decisions, or bad decisions, and haven’t been good role models. To be someone that people look up to is important to me."
"There’s gonna be times in life when people tell you that you can’t, that’s when you just gotta turn around and say watch me."
"You can’t always get what you want. But, if you’re lucky, you get what you need."
"Sometimes people say that you can not live your dreams. Sometimes people say that you can not sell out Madison square garden. Well, this is what I tell them… Never say never!"
Personality
Besides being a media star, Bieber's mix personality has created some controversy in his account. During his career, Justin Bieber has faced legal issues multiple times, being accused of reckless driving in 2012 and vandalism in 2013. He was finally arrested on January 23, 2014, in Miami Beach, Florida, for driving under the influence (DUI). Following his release on bond, he got arrested again in September 2014 for dangerous driving. Sometimes he was portrayed as whimsical and over pampered teen talent but the gap of leading a peaceful life in contrast of the glaring celeb life sometimes made him expressive, explicit, and aggressive; however, he has acquired a balanced personality nowadays.
After lots of ups and downs in his media image, now Justin Bieber is stable and conscious about his public image. According to yellow magazine people, Justin is now known for his humble and cooperative attitude despite his astounding professional success and financial achievement. His fan base is increasing every day and in the industry he is known as a super cute and super sweet performer. He is the right face of balanced character as Justin Bieber personality has now become sensible, self-effacing, and much diplomatic to face the turbulence of global mass media with better ease.
Physical Characteristics:
Justin Bieber's height is 5ft 9 inches or 1.75 meters (175 centimetres). According to Justin, he has always been of average height from childhood and at the age of 21, he isn’t expected to become any taller. Many people always believe Justin Bieber to be much shorter simply because he is always in the company of taller people who include bodyguards, dressing crew, fellow artists, promoters and more, so there has been speculation that he measures in at 5-foot-7-inches.
Justin Bieber' weigh is 145.5 pounds or 66 kilograms. Matched to his height of 175 centimetres, Bieber's body is proportional and well-balanced for his age and height. He has an athletic body which blossomed after entering puberty. In fact, he became more popular after entering this stage after attaining good masculine physique and breaking his voice. It was no longer the child-like voice but more of a more mature adult. He even decided to change his style and adopt a flagship hairstyle that is known as “The Bieber haircut” as well as get some tattoos.
Justin Bieber's skin colour is white. He has very light skin complexion and light brown eyes.
Bieber initially sang with a boy soprano voice, before his voice broke, as was evidenced during a performance of "Pray" at the 2010 American Music Awards. As an adult singer, Bieber's voice type is tenor, with a vocal range spanning from the bass A (A2) to the high tenor F (F5).
Quotes from others about the person
"He's the only person in humanity who's grown up the way he has - with smartphones and cameras on him 24/7 ... Another kid can go out and have a good night on the town, and no one gives a crap, but Justin is the most Googled person on the planet -- for four years straight!" - Scooter Braun, Bieber's manager
"Justin is a really great little guy... But that's his problem - he's a little guy... His fans are growing up, they're 18, 19-year-olds now... they're young women. And he still looks like that little boy!... He needs some hair or something - I just don't think, from my gut - maybe my gut's wrong because it's not 100% - but I don't think he's going to stand the test of time... But you know what, I don't feel sorry for him, because he's made oodles and he's a fabulously nice person and he'll go on to do something else." - Sharon Osbourne
"He's a great guy. He's doing great out there right now." - Vanilla Ice
"I want to take Justin Bieber for a month and just lock him up in a cage where we sit and make music. He's one of the most successful people in the world, but his music could be so much tighter." - Tyler, The Creator
"I don't think there's an archetype for the Justin Bieber fan. A Bieber fan just looks like an American. You wouldn't even need a costume to try and resemble one." - Fred Armisen
"Working with Justin Bieber, I learned that he can literally do any genre - he's a chameleon. His voice is so flexible that he's not locked in to one genre, and it just shows the world that he can really sing anything." - Poo Bear
"I look at Justin Bieber and my heart breaks for him, because I know what he's going to go through. He knows it. Everybody knows it." - Donny Osmond
"Artists like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga have more sway over popular minds than a politician." - Drake Bell
"I actually ran into Justin Bieber when nobody knew him at the Kids' Choice Awards. He came up to me like, 'Mr. Crews, how you doing? I'm produced by Usher and I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Justin Bieber,' and I just knew he was a good, nice kid. Next year, people are screaming and attacking him!" - Terry Crews

colleague:
Scooter Braun
Scooter Braun has been Bieber’s manager since the early days of his career. He first encountered Justin Bieber when he saw a video of a 12-year-old Bieber on YouTube, performing a song by Ne-Yo. After further online success, Braun pitched Bieber to two successful artists, Usher and Justin Timberlake; both expressed interest. Eventually, Usher's mentor, music executive L. A. Reid, signed Bieber to a deal with Island Def Jam in partnership with Raymond-Braun Media Group (RBMG).
