In 1985 Justin Spring received a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College.
Justin Spring is the author of two biographies Fairfield Porter: A Life in Art and Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward. He authored many monographs, catalogs, museum publications, and books, including The Gourmands' Way, The Essential Edward Hopper and Coming to Light: Avery Gottlieb Rothko. Spring has held research fellowships from Yale University, Brown University, Radcliffe College and Amherst College.
Justin Spring is the recipient of many prizes and honors. His book was a finalist for the National Book Award. His work has been supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship in General Non-Fiction and a Leon Levy Center Fellowship in Biography. Justin also received the International Association of Art Critics Best Show Award and was a finalist for the Lamda Literary Award in Art History.
