He threw two no-hitters while in high school, including a 17–strikeout game as a senior. He also batted.405/.478/.620 with three home runs. Sheffield was committed to play college baseball at Vanderbilt University.
He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft and was the first player to sign.
