Jusuke was born in Edo, Japan in 1820. When he was young, he changed his name to Jusuke Hanayagi.

Hanatagi Jusuke studied under Senzo Nishikawa IV, assuming the stage name of Yoshijiro Nishikawa.
He became a leading dancer in Tokyo in the Meiji Era. He was almost the exclusive choreographer of all Kabuki theaters in Tokyo until he retired from the Kabuki stage due to a dis- agreement with Danjuro Ichikawa IX. Thereafter he taught dancing to geisha.
