Jyotirmoy Ghosh

Background

Jyotirmoy Ghosh was born on January 1, 1896, in the village of Ghasiara (now Jessore District, India).

Education

In 1916, Jyotirmoy Ghosh graduated from Calcutta University as an Honored Bachelor of Arts (1st class 1), in 1918, received the Master of Arts Degree (1st class 2) at Calcutta University. In 1927, he became Philosophy Doctor at Edinburgh University.

Career

His research was devoted to the Theory of Elasticity and Relativity. Jyotirmoy Ghosh was a specialist in Applied Mathematics. In 1921-1925, worked as Lecturer in Maths at the University of Dacca, in 1927-1928, he was a reader in Maths.

In 1928-1929, Jyotirmoy Ghosh was in charge of the Mathematics Department. In 1930-1931, he was Professor of Maths at Presidency College, Calcutta. In 1939-1942, he was Senior Professor of Maths and officer-in-charge at the Astronomical Observatory. In 1942, Jyotirmoy Ghosh became vice-principal, in 1943 - acting principal.

In 1944-1948, Jyotirmoy Ghosh was in the position of Principal at Hooghly Mohsin College, Chinsura. In 1948, he was appointed as the Principal of Presidency College in Calcutta and in 1951, he retired and started practicing as a homeopath.

Membership

Jyotirmoy Ghosh was a fellow of the National Institute of Sciences of India and a member of Calcutta Mathematical Society and Indian Science News Association.
