Background
Kachiemon was born in 1844 in Ibaragi Prefecture, Japan to a family who had served the Mito Clan for generations as shipping agents.

After the Meiji Restoration (1868) was appointed purveyor to Foreign Ministry and commissioned with the job of buying silver for the Mint. Founded the Kawa-saki Co. (1874), which later became the Kawasaki Bank, after the Banking Act came into force (1880).
