Kaijiro Notomi was born in 1844 in Hizen Province (Saga Prefecture).

In 1860 Kaijiro Notomi studied Chinese painting of the South school. He went to Shanghai and studied oil painting in Yokohama from 1871.
Kaido was a judge of the universal exhibition which was held in Austria in 1873. After inspecting the ceramic industries in Bohemia and France, he returned to Japan in 1875. In 1877 he started the Edogawa Pottery Plant together with Makoto Shiota.
Also Kaijiro Notomi experimented in the manufacture of soap and improved lacquer ware manufacturing methods. He was director of the Ishikawa Prefectural Industrial School and other schools. After retiring in his late years, he was devoted to painting and sculpture in Tokyo.
