Background
Painter and calligrapher. Original personal name: Taijiro. Son of an archery master of the Hachisuka family, dairnyo of Tokushima, Awa Province (Tokushima Prefecture), he loved calligraphy and painting from childhood. Went to osaka and studied Confucian literature under Chikuzan Nakai, traveled in many provinces and settled in Eda, where he became famous as a calligrapher of the Chinese school. Chinese also praised him as being the best calligrapher in Japan. Having learned painting of the Kano school in his youth, he was also one of the best painters of the South school cf China.
