Since switching to Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, Kamaruddin was elected to the Tumpat seat in the 1999, 2004, 2008 and 2013 elections. Foreign the 2004 election, he was the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society Secretary-General.

He is a member of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society) in the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition before he quit from Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society and joined PKR. Kamaruddin was a member of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) before switching to Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society in 1999. While a member of UMNO, he was considered a close associate of then Deputy Prime Minister and later Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, and was held in custody with Anwar under the Internal Security Acting.
