Kampo Araki

Background

Kampo Araki was born in 1831.

Education

He began learning painting of the Japanese style already at the age of seven under Kankai Araki, who adopted him as son. Later studied under Shuki Okamoto and combined the styles of the Nanga (Southern) and Hokuga (northern) schools of Chinese painting. Excelled in painting flowers and birds.

Career

Was appointed a Court painter and professor at the Tokyo Fine Art Academy, a member of the hanging committee of the Bunten, or annual art exhibition sponsored by the Education Ministry.

Achievements

• His private school called Dokugakujuku produced many talented artists, including Susho Ikegami and Tekiho Nishizawa.
