Kanae was born in 1852, in Kagoshima, Japan. He was ordered by the Lord of the Kagoshima Clan to study in Britain and France.
After staying four years in England, he went to the United States together with Arinori Mori and Munenori Terajima. He operated a large vineyard in California with an American, Harris, in Santa Rosa, California. He stayed in the United States for over 60 years until death, having been well known as a pioneer Japanese emigrant. After the death of his partner, Harxns, he inherited all of his fortunes and became a millionaire. His business suffered heavily from the Prohibition, however. When the Prohibition was lifted in 1933, he shipped to the market 130,000 gallons of wine he had saved for more than 10 years.
