Haraguchi Kaname studied in the United States and worked as an engineer in the Pennsylvania Railroad Co.
After returning to Japan, he became Chief Engineer in the Tokyo Prefectural Office and directed repair works on the capital’s waterwork system. He then became chief engineer of the Railway Board, superintending all railway engineering works. He designed the Takahashi and Azumabashi Bridges in Tokyo. In 1905 Haraguchi Kaname became an adviser to the Chinese Government railways.
