Kaname Koibuchi was originally priest of Suwa Shrine (Ibaraki Prefecture). He tried to rescue Nariaki Tokugawa, Lord of Mito Clan, from the punishment meted to him by the Shogun, and which culminated in his joining the group which attacked and assassinated Prime Minister Naosuke Ii at Sakuradamon Gate. In this encounter he sustained injuries and committed harakiri.
