Kanroku came to Japan for the 10th Anniversary of Empress Regnant Suiko (about 602) bearing gifts in the form of books on astronomy and geography and a calendar. The Empress was so struck by his learning that she asked him to stay and teach children at Hokoji Temple. In the 32nd year of the Empress' rule a priest was murdered and he was appointed Sojo (bishop) and asked to investigate and judge the assailant. This was the first time a priest was given an official appointment in Japan.
