Kansuke Okamoto started on an exploration trip of Sakhalin (1863). Proceeding along the eastern coast of the island he reached the mouth of the Amur River (1865), passed through the Mamiya Straits and inspected various points on the western coast, thus accomplishing a circumnavigation of Sakhalin. He was appointed a judge of the Hakodate Court and endeavored hard to develop wasteland in Hokkaido. He visited China (1873) as an adviser of the War Office. In China, he made unsuccessful efforts to foster cooperation between that country and Japan. He later became director of the Tokushima Middle School. Wrote many books including a diary of his Sakhalin exploration.
