Kanzo Kuroki was born in 1882.
After graduating from Waseda University Kanzo Kuroki conducted research in Japanese music for Tokyo Academy of Music under the patronage of his former teacher, Tatsuyuki Takano. The result of his research was published under the title "Chronicle of Modern Japanese Music" and included chapters on Nagauta, Tokiwazu, Tomimoto, Kiyomoto and Gidayit. After this he rejoined his alma mater as instructor (1923), then he was a professor at Tokyo Higher School (1925).
