Karen attended El Dorado Union High School, Placerville, California between 1955 and 1959. She attended the University of California, Berkeley between 1959 and 1963 and received the B.A. degree (cum laude). She received the Ph.D. degree on Anthropology in 1967.
Karen worked as an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles, California between 1967 from 1968. She was also an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta between 1968 and 1970. From 1970 till 1972 she was an assistant professor of anthropology at San Jose State University, San Jose, California. At San Francisco State University, San Francisco, California Bruhns worked as a faculty member between 1972 and 1980 and as a professor of anthropology from 1980 till present.
