Carlson was born on March 2, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana, United States.
Carlson educated at C. E. Byrd High School. Also she attened the University of Arkansas from 1962 to 1965.
Carlson began her career, appearing in shows, including "Laugh In" and "The Hollywood Palace". She starred in television series and films such as "The Candidate", 1972 and "The Octagon", 1980. Karen played Nancy Scotfield in 10 episodes of the soap opera "Dallas", 1986, and Sarah Hallisey in twelve episodes of "In the Heat of the Night".
She was also a series regular in the film "American Dream", "The Yellow Rose" and "Two Marriages with Michael Murphy". Carlson played Mary Ellen in "Here Come the Brides". In addition, she was a guest starred in "The Man from U. N. C. L. E.", 1967, "Mission: Impossible", 1971, "Bonanza", 1973, "Starsky and Hutch", 1976-1977, "Centennial", 1978, "The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo", 1979, "Hill Street Blues", 1983 and "Hotel", 1987. She appeared for the last time in the film "Out of Ashes", 2013. Since 2013 Karen has turned her focus from acting to directing and screenwriting.

On June 22, 1968 Karen Carlson married David Soul, with whom she divorced in 1977. They have a son - Jon Kristjian Solberg. Then on January 7, 1983 she married Devin Payne, with whom she divorced in 1996. They have 2 children.
