Karen Davis was born on February 4, 1944, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, United States. She is the daughter of Amos, an attorney, and Mary (Orr) Davis.
Karen studied for her undergraduate degree at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. She obtained her Master's degree from Shippensburg State College in 1980, and her PhD in English from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1987.
Karen Davis worked as a teacher of English at the University of Maryland for twelve years. While working there, she founded the Animal Rights Coalition in 1989 and pioneered a course on the role of animals in the Western philosophic and literary tradition for the University Honors Program.
In 1990 she founded United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit public-education organization and chicken sanctuary that addresses the treatment of domestic fowl in food productionn, science, education, entertainment, and human-companionship situations. United Poultry Concerns promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl through its chicken sanctuary, which is open to the public. It also publishes its quarterly newsletter, Poultry Press. Since 1999, Davis and United Poultry Concerns have hosted six conferences on farmed animal advocacy issues.
Karen Davis is the author of several books on veganism and animal rights, including Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs: An Inside Look at the Modern Poultry Industry (1997) and The Holocaust and the Henmaid's Tale: A Case for Comparing Atrocities (2005). She is a frequent contributor to periodicals, including Journal of English and Germanic Philology, Animals' Agenda, Between Species: Journal of Ethics, Humane Innovations and Alternatives, and Guide to Healthy Eating.
