She is currently Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University. She was educated at the University of East Anglia (Bachelor of Science, 1987) and completed her Doctor of Philosophy at Sydney Brenner"s department at the University of Cambridge in 1991 entitled "A study of human and murine cardiac development using molecular genetics methodology". She was awarded the Potamkin Prize in 2006, together with Karen Ashe and Bradley Hyman.
