Background

May-Newman, Karen Diane was born on June 12, 1965 in Arcadia, California, United States. Daughter of Edward Bradshaw and Norma Charlotte (Newman) May.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Applied Science, University of California-San Diego, La Jolla, 1988;Master of Science in Engineering Science, University of California-San Diego, La Jolla, 1990;Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengring., University of California-San Diego, La Jolla, 1993.

Career

Biomedical engineering technician, Veterans Administration Hospital., San Diego, 1987-1989;research assistant, University of California-San Diego, La Jolla, 1989-1993;National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, since 1993. Secretary Johns Hopkins Postdoctoral Associations, Baltimore, 1994-1995. Symposium organizer University of California-San Diego Bioengring.

Student Organisation, La Jolla, 1990-1993.

Achievements

  • Achievements include research investigating the mechanical interaction between perfusion and surrounding myocardium, findings showing large (10-15%) wall volume changes associated with myocardial perfusion display large transmural gradients. Mitral valve mechanical propertiesare nonlinear and anisotropic, reflecting microscopic and macroscopic structural features. Myocardial contrast enhancement in Medical Research Institute images depends on the compartment in which the contrast molecules distribute.

Work on atomic force microscopy of cultured fibroblasts demonstrating relationship between cytoskeletal structure and mechanical stiffness. Avocations: mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, batik fabric art, skiing. F C.
