Served as volunteer in the 74th regiment of infantry in the FrancoGerman war of 1870 during the siege of Metz. Passed the two examinations for church service at Coblenz in 1871 and 1874.
Became Privatdocent of Old Testament Theology in the University of Bonn in 1873 after taking there his degree of lie. theology
