At the University of Leipzig he began in 1883 the study of German and Comparative Linguistics. He studied various Middle Eastern languages and as a focus Sanskrit and Indology. His supervisor was Ernst Windisch, he also attended lectures with Friedrich Max Müller. With Georg von der Gabelentz he learned Chinese and Japanese. He continued his study of Japanese after his Leipzig degree with Inoue Tetsujiro at the University of Berlin.
In 1889 he became a lecturer of German Language and Literature at the University of Tokyo, in 1891 became Full Professor of German Literature and Comparative Linguistics. In 1914, he received the first professorship in Japanese studies at a German university (and in Europe at all), the chair of the Department of Language and Culture of Japan at the Hamburgisches Kolonialinstitut. In 1925 he was elected foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences.
