Karl Gegenbaur was born on August 21, 1826 in Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany.
He attended the local schools and, instead of following family tradition by going into civil service, decided to study medicine. In 1845 he entered the University of Wü rzburg, Wurzburg, where his instructors included Rudolf von Kö llikerKolliker and Rudolf Virchow in biology and graduated as M. D. in 1851.
For two years Karl traveled in Italy and Sicily then returned in 1853 to become a lecturer at the University of Würzburg. Wurzburg. His valuable researches on marine animals led to his appointment in 1855 as professor of anatomy at the University of Jena.
In 1873, Gegenbauer was appointed professor of anatomy and director of the Anatomical Institute at the University of Heidelberg, holding these posts until his retirement in 1901. Gegenbauer's early studies were of the anatomy and evolution of marine animals; from them he turned to research on vertebrates. His essay on the evolution of the egg appeared in 1861; in it he demonstrated that the eggs of Vertebrata were simple cells. Gegenbauer held that the cell did not necessarily require a membrane and that the nucleus and the plasm were the principal components; this was perhaps his most important discovery. Gegenbauer was the first comparative anatomist to place the study of the subject on an evolutionary basis, thus founding modern anatomy. Gegenbauer had keen insight and great powers of analysis, with broad knowledge of animal morphology. His bestknown work is his Grundriss der vergleichenden Anatomie (1874), which was translated by W. F. J. Bell into English as Elements of Comparative Anatomy (1878), with additions by E. Ray Lankester. In 1875 he founded the Morphologisches Jahrbuch and edited it for many years. His other writings include an autobiography published in 1901 under the title Erlebtes und Erstrebtes.
